Telluride River Family Shoot

Tucked away in the southwest corner of Colorado, Telluride isn’t the easiest place to reach. But, oh is it worth it! The Reed Family calls Texas home. They had been on a vacation to Colorado’s high country to enjoy the cooler temperatures and have a chance to spend a lot of time together before school began in September.

As a Colorado-based family lifestyle photographer, it was a perfect opportunity to do what I love the most, document Colorado family adventures.

The Reed family were headed back to Texas in a few short days and wanted to celebrate this time together with a family photo session. They had a “Colorado Christmas card” photo on their wishlist.

If you have been to Telluride, you know that it’s the perfect place for a lot of things. Jeeping excursions, fly fishing, hiking, and biking are all at the top of an adventurous family’s itinerary. But, if I was to pick one thing that Telluride might be best for, family holiday photos might be at the top of the list!

If you’re wondering what it feels like for a family to have a photographer following them around for the day, I’ll tell you. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can say what it’s been like for the hundreds of families that I’ve photographed over the ten years that I’ve been a family lifestyle photographer.

Many times the families that I’m photographing are new to the area. Knowing Colorado as well as I do, it’s nice to be able to assist the family with their vacation planning whether it’s in Boulder, Denver, Aspen, Vail or Telluride.

In most cases, days before I’ve had a chance to actually meet your family, I would have already sent you a short guide on the area’s “can’t miss” high points.

By the time that we’re actually together, taking photos, you’ve been on hikes, visited coffee carts, and enjoyed restaurants that might slip by a casual visitor to the area.

My goal is to make you (as parents) the hero of your own family vacation.

When it comes time to take the photos, I really just function a friendly observer in the background. With the smallest amount of guidance possible, I love to watch (and document) the interactions that follow organically.

My goal is to say yes to everything; it’s your time after all. The imperfect, slightly-coming-apart moments are what ring true.

The funny thing is that they’re also the moments that become “famous” family stories, better with each retelling around family holiday tables many years into the future.
